Seems every state wants independence these days. I found this interesting book, The Rogue Republic, on the Internet the other day. West Florida shared a similar short-lived independence like Texas before joining the Union. Always got a kick out of the fact that when acquiring the Louisiana Purchase, the Jefferson administration thought West Florida was part of the deal, only to find out it was still in Spanish hands. Nothing a little "rebellion" couldn't cure. This was their "marching song,"
- West Floriday, that lovely nation,
- Free from king and tyranny,
- Thru’ the world shall be respected,
- For her true love of Liberty.
Change Floriday to Amerikay, and king to Obama, and you could have a marching song for the Tea Party ; )

Gosh, don't give 'em any ideas! Was just reading about Christie this a.m. I think he's going to be our next president. I wonder what that will mean?
ReplyDeleteHe said again he wouldn't run for President,

All though, of the Republicans so far, he would be the one I could most tolerate as President.
Thank goodness for that. He is the one I think could have beaten Obama, easy.
ReplyDeleteChristie seems to be the Mario Cuomo of the Republicans. I imagine he didn't want to get into the dog pen with Perry, Bachmann, Cain, et al. What a motley bunch of candidates. The only one who has been relatively able to keep his head above the fray is Romney, but no one seems to like him for it. The Repugs seem to be itching for a dog fight. Looks like Cain is giving Perry more than he can handle.
ReplyDeleteHaving connected with many of my old high school friends through facebook, it is a shame to see how many of them have become teabaggers. It shouldn't have surprised me given how conservative Northwest Florida is. They don't call it Lower Alabama (LA) for nothing. The Crimson Tide still reigns supreme.
ReplyDeleteThe posts and comments are really something, displaying a blissful ignorance of contemporary events, much less history. The other day someone posted a quote from Patrick Henry, and when I noted that Henry was an ardent anti-Federalist, opposing the ratification of the Constitution, the person was shocked and asked what was my "news source." Another chimed in, "probably MSNBC." So, I posted the opening speech by Patrick Henry at the Virginia Ratifying Convention in which he gainsaid the Constitution.
I've noticed repeatedly that Teabaggers have absolutely no proper conception of the Constitution. What they represent are the early anti-Federalist positions and would be much more comfortable with the original Articles of Confederation, if they even knew what they were.
"What's your news source?" Now that's a classic!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of Hank Williams Jr referring to Obama as Hitler and his shock at the response his comment generated.
ReplyDeleteHis shock apparently comes from the fact that _everyone_ apparently talks that way about Obama in the "news sources" he watches/listens to.
What a surprise that there is a whole other world out there, but that his "act of contrition" was more of defiance, like the good ol' boy that he is. The Dixie Chicks went through hell and back for their fiery criticism of Bush in the lead up to the Iraq War.
ReplyDelete"After much prayer and serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be seeking the 2012 GOP nomination for President of the United States."

That's a big relief ; )
''big relief''
ReplyDeleteActually, I was hoping for a PALIN-COULTER Repukeblican ticket ~ it would sure create a lot of laughs.
They may end up with Perry-Bachmann. That should give Comedians plenty of fodder.
ReplyDeleteEven the Republican party isn't that stupid.
ReplyDeleteI still think Christie could have won. There's something about his quarrelsome, bullying nature that appeals to people right now because I think the nation is seeing what is happening all around us ... and it's pretty discouraging. They want someone to talk back on their behalf. He probably would have even won over some democrats, in spite of his policies.
Mitt Romney is the opposite of Christie so let's hope he is the nominee. At least then Obama will be able to get a word in edgewise.
(I wrote "Mitch" Romney initially -- I don't even know his name yet!)
Christie would have found himself in a battle with Romney for the "middle ground," what little of it is left in the GOP. The party is so right wing these days that Christie would be seen as a "liberal" by the Bible-thumpers," who are torn between Perry and Bachmann.
ReplyDeleteWhat made him a double threat, though, was that he had the Koch bros and citizen united behind him, so he would have had an endless stream of money. And a big mouth. MITT (I did it again, writing Mitch) wouldn't have been able to get a word in edgewise.
ReplyDeletePlus I think Christie is smart on his feet -- Romney doesn't strike me as having much on the ball, other than a willingness to work hard and memorize his responses, which is not a bad quality but not necessarily a winning one.
I think the Democrats lucked out with Christie's decision.
