It is safe to say Donald has a Nikki problem. Even in the ruby red state of West Virginia, Nikki Haley polled 10 percent without so much as stepping a foot in the state. She won 16 percent of the vote in the Charleston area. She did much better in Maryland and Nebraska, where she polled 20 percent. Yet, the Donald hasn't made any attempt to reach out to her. Instead, he was holding a rally on the Jersey shore, imagining himself as Bruce Almighty.
I suppose Wildwood Beach is an easy reach from Manhattan, where Trump was getting a day off from court. His team claimed he drew a mega-sized crowd, yet the flock of worshippers couldn't have been more than 20,000 as the mayor of the beachside community said that is all the beach holds. That didn't stop Roger Stone from posting a picture of a Rod Stewart concert from the 1990s and exclaiming "Could Biden draw a crowd like this?" Other Trump supporters posted pictures of Rio and other crowded beaches in an effort to bolster the Donald's ego, as no one has been showing up for protests outside the courthouse.
That didn't stop MAGA Senators J.D. Vance and Tommy Tuberville from sitting in the gallery, while Trump's defensive team grilled Michael Cohen. Fox called Cohen a "convicted liar" but the former loyal toady to Trump walked the jury through his decision to abandon his Orangeness, who could only fume from his front row seat. Even House Speaker Mike Johnson was on hand to issue a statement outside the courthouse on how he considered this trial a "sham." Sounds like Trump found a way to get around his gag order.
The problem is that the spectacle of Trump on Trial draws massive attention even if the audience watches it mostly on their cellphones, laptops and televisions. That's all the media talks about. His trial over mishandling classified documents has been indefinitely delayed and the Supreme Court still hasn't decided whether he should be granted whole or partial immunity in federal cases pending against him. The trial in Georgia over election interference has similarly been put on hold as the state continues its effort to stonewall prosecution.
I still can't figure out why Republicans go so far out of their way to protect him. He has done nothing to help their cause. The stink trail he leaves behind him has cost them the past three elections at the national, state and local levels, with only a handful of prominent Trump loyalists winning high profile elections. For the most part, his chosen candidates have cost Republicans valuable Senate seats, governors and state legislatures. Yet, party leaders continue to show their loyalty to Trump as if some old magic will come back the fourth time around.
They've been buoyed by all these polls that show him leading in battleground states, even if there is nothing on the ground to suggest he has this widespread support. If he can't put Nikki to rest two months after she dropped out of the race then there are serious doubts among the Republican electorate. There is talk of forcing Trump take her as his VP, but Nikki seems content to ride this election out, having chosen to head up a conservative "think tank." The funny part is that they stand arm in arm on most issues, it's just that Nikki has a softer way of peddling these ultra-conservative views.
Not Donald, he continues to project himself as El Comandante much to the delight of his salivating throng. They want a tyrant in the White House to get back at all those damn liberals that have turned America into a woke nation. As if to further "own the libs" his supporters have actually started wearing diapers and sporting t-shirts that read, "Diapers over Dems" and "Real Men Wear Diapers." Sadly, this is real.
It's almost like he is purposefully trying to tank this election with his Hannibal Lecter references and reciting lyrics from a 1963 song called "The Snake," alluding to unwanted immigrants. Yet, the more he goes off on these strange riffs the higher he rises in the polls, as if we are on a doomsday track for his inauguration next January.
Well, I just can't believe my country is that daft. I think this is largely the product of a bored media that needs to add some comic relief to the news cycle after covering the War in Gaza the past 8 months. Maybe J.D. and Tommy will show up at the courthouse next time in diapers to show their solidarity? This all must be deeply embarrassing for any conservative that prides himself on his respectability, yet Mitch just lowers his head as if trying to avoid media attention. Donald has made a complete farce of this election cycle.
