Wake the f*ck up!

It was a rough week for the Republicans.  They thought they had the Democrats over a barrel on the budget, imagining they could strong arm the White House into making concessions, only to have it all blow up in their face.  Bitter infighting ensued.  It was soon learned that the game plan all along was to defund the Justice Dept. so that the notorious Jack Smith wouldn't be able to prosecute Donald Trump.  Apparently, Trump himself spearheaded this effort or so he boasted on his Truth Social.  I have to think this only adds to the obstruction charges against him.

If that wasn't bad enough one of MAGA's most visible House representatives got caught with her hand down the pants of her date at an all-ages musical in Denver.  That's right, you guessed it - Lauren Boebert - the 36 year-old "grandma" from Colorado's third district. She tried to deny it at first but then it was pointed out that the theater had cameras and so she blamed it on her "Democratic" date.

At least Lauren no longer had a husband to explain the evening to.  This is not the case with Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota, who is alleged of having an affair with Trump henchman, Corey Lewandowski, for years.  Of course she denies it being a god-fearing family woman but I imagine it won't be long before the truth comes out and she is forced to make some kind of admission.  Too bad, she was apparently at the top of Trump's VP choices, much to the chagrin of MTG, who has been doing all the heavy lifting in Congress trying to get the government shutdown so that her idol can escape justice.  I suppose Greene can go back to Georgia and hock her fitness products.

Then came the news that Rudy Giuliani got so excited the night of the insurrection that he groped the nearest woman to him.  This turned out to be Cassidy Hutchinson, one of the many Trump aides who have turned on his administration.  It is just one of several sexual abuse charges being leveled against Rudy but he no longer has the funds to defend himself.  Even his lawyers are filing suits against him for unpaid legal fees.

Yet, Trump somehow still leads in the polls, which is causing much consternation among liberal pundits who believe Biden should step aside for a younger, more dynamic Democratic candidate like Gavin Newsom.  Age and health supposedly weighing heavy on many Americans' minds, yet they consider the obese orange shitgibbon the best alternative.  Go figure?

At some point clearer heads will prevail but for now the MAGAheads are having their way in Congress.  Gaetz made it openly clear he wants to defund Jack Smith at all costs.  Greene keeps shouting for Biden's head.  "Gym" Jordan made a complete ass off himself at a judicial hearing on the justice department, getting schooled by both his Democratic colleague Eric Swalwell over the meaning of subpoena and Attorney General Merrick Garland as to who the Justice Dept. works for.  It wasn't pleasant for the former wrestling coach, so he temporarily ducked out.

I would like to think the American public is taking note of all this and not just chalking it up as the latest chapter in the Real Life of GOP Representatives.  How much more of this ridiculous behavior can you tolerate?  Some of these persons will most likely be voted out of office in the next election. Boebert barely survived the midterms against a much underfunded Democratic opponent.  Others like Jordan will survive as his district is so heavily skewed in his favor that there is no way a Democrat could ever beat him.  The bigger problem however remains the resentment of an American public that still believes Trump is a legitimate choice for President.

The erstwhile president is even trying to intercede on the UAW strike, staging his next rally in Detroit.  Normally you would laugh something like this off as everyone knows where Trump stands on labor.  Yet, he carried some of the largest manufacturing districts in Michigan last time around so there are obviously a lot of very stupid union workers who believe this moron represents their interests.

Reading back over my post on Hoffa a few years ago, I saw that the Teamsters have long been torn between the Democrats and Republicans.  Hoffa supported Nixon in the 1960 election and was subsequently investigated by Robert Kennedy, landing him in jail in 1964.  Some believe that Hoffa and his mafia friends had JFK assassinated the year before.  Although the unions have generally favored Democratic candidates.

However, Americans got all bent out of shape when prices spiked last year and have been blaming "Dark Brandon" ever since.  It doesn't matter that inflation was worldwide or that Biden's inflation reduction act brought inflation back down to 3.2% over the past year, the lowest among industrial countries.  Many people still give him negative reviews.  Add to that all the talk of Biden being a doddering old fool despite traveling halfway around the world to attend a G20 conference in India, and pitching climate change initiatives both at home and abroad.  Nope, it is the price of gas and eggs they care about.

Yet, we see the awful alternative on full display - a deranged man so obsessed with his own impeding doom that he will do anything to shutdown government in the pathetic effort to defund the justice department.  This is January 6 all over again.

Come on folks, wake the fuck up!

Dylan in America

Whoever it was in 1969 who named the very first Bob Dylan bootleg album “Great White Wonder” may have had a mischievous streak. There are any number of ways you can interpret the title — most boringly, the cover was blank, like the Beatles’ “White Album” — but I like to see a sly allusion to “Moby-Dick.” In the seven years since the release of his first commercial record, Dylan had become the white whale of 20th-century popular song, a wild, unconquerable and often baffling force of musical nature who drove fans and critics Ahab-mad in their efforts to spear him, lash him to the hull and render him merely comprehensible. --- Bruce Handy, NYTimes ____________________________________________ I figured we can start fresh with Bob Dylan.  Couldn't resist this photo of him striking a Woody Guthrie pose.  Looks like only yesterday.  Here is a link to the comments building up to this reading group.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

Welcome to this month's reading group selection.  David Von Drehle mentions The Melting Pot , a play by Israel Zangwill, that premiered on Broadway in 1908.  At that time theater was accessible to a broad section of the public, not the exclusive domain it has become over the decades.  Zangwill carried a hopeful message that America was a place where old hatreds and prejudices were pointless, and that in this new country immigrants would find a more open society.  I suppose the reference was more an ironic one for Von Drehle, as he notes the racial and ethnic hatreds were on display everywhere, and at best Zangwill's play helped persons forget for a moment how deep these divides ran.  Nevertheless, "the melting pot" made its way into the American lexicon, even if New York could best be describing as a boiling cauldron in the early twentieth century. Triangle: The Fire That Changed America takes a broad view of events that led up the notorious fire, noting the gro

Team of Rivals Reading Group

''Team of Rivals" is also an America ''coming-of-age" saga. Lincoln, Seward, Chase et al. are sketched as being part of a ''restless generation," born when Founding Fathers occupied the White House and the Louisiana Purchase netted nearly 530 million new acres to be explored. The Western Expansion motto of this burgeoning generation, in fact, was cleverly captured in two lines of Stephen Vincent Benet's verse: ''The stream uncrossed, the promise still untried / The metal sleeping in the mountainside." None of the protagonists in ''Team of Rivals" hailed from the Deep South or Great Plains. _______________________________ From a review by Douglas Brinkley, 2005
