So Trump stays on the ballot in Colorado. Not that it really matters as the only primary he has lost so far is DC, which in his addled mind he lost on purpose. More interesting is that Nikki Haley withdrew her pledge to support the Republican nominee, leaving pundits to speculate what that means. Will she run as an independent if she loses the nomination and try to pull of the "Murkowski maneuver?" If you aren't familiar with this rare fete, I will elucidate you.
In 2010, Lisa Murkowski, the incumbent Republican senator from Alaska, found herself "teabagged" in the primaries. She had run afoul of the movement that sprung up in the wake of John McCain's 2008 loss. Sarah Palin became the de-facto leader of the Tea Party after that failed bid, or "Mama Grizzly" as she liked to be called. She and Lisa hated each other. The animosity stemmed from Sarah's rather limited understanding of what it meant to be governor of Alaska. Sarah pushed hardcore conservative Joe Miller to run against Lisa in the primaries. Miller won but Lisa ran in the general election as a write-in candidate and won! She retained her seat much to the chagrin of the radical Republicans who thought they now controlled the party, having won big in the midterms and inspiring the term "red wave."
Lisa is one of the few endorsements Nikki Haley has received from Republican Senate leaders. The majority have begrudgingly sided with Trump as Haley loses state after state after state. She clearly has no chance among the Trump fan base but in a general election, who knows? I think No Labels is seriously considering recruiting her for a historic run at the White House, even if she has said "ixnay." What, you don't want Joe Manchin as a running mate, Nikki?
That would certainly shake things up as Nikki has consistently polled ahead of Biden by wide margins in national polls. I'm sure the pollsters will start putting out three-way polls just to test the waters. No Labels can always find a vice-presidential nominee more to her liking. Why not Lisa Murkowski?
We can only dream. In the meantime, what to make of this Supreme Court decision? Apparently, they didn't like Colorado using the US Constitution to defend their decision to drop Trump from the primary ballot. Seems the Constitution is only reserved for the Supreme Court. All 9 judges ruled against Colorado, although the women justices felt the male justices went too far by limiting any further state attempts to disqualify federal candidates. So much for states' rights, which had long been seen as the cornerstone of conservative ideology.
I won't say Republican, as the original Republicans were very much federalists. This is why so many Southern Democrats wouldn't vote Republican until Barry Goldwater came along. Now these Dixiecrats pretty much control the Republican Party. It's enough to make Honest Abe roll over in his grave.
Some think the decision will only serve to mobilize Democrats in November. They haven't come up with a catchy title yet, but I will go with "D'ohvember." The conservative Supreme Court has a way of overstepping its bounds, much like Homer Simpson, and bringing opponents out in full force. Hard to say what the robed clowns will decide on presidential immunity at this point. It seems like they are making the American people a jury by proxy for thorny issues they don't want to decide. If they kick the can down the road far enough on this landmark case then it will be decided at the ballot box in D'ohvember.
I've lost all respect for the Supreme Court, even the so-called liberal ones. I don't see why Colorado or any other state can't use section 3 of the 14th amendment to disqualify Trump. There's no way Congress will ever address the issue, as the Court seems to think. Our wily US senators and representatives haven't been able to codify much of anything due to the deep partisan split. So, the Supreme Court and Congress just kick divisive issues back and forth. This is what happens when they are all in the pay of wealthy billionaires. We are moving all too quickly toward a corporate state.
I thought it was pretty clear that Trump engaged in the insurrection attempt on January 6, inciting a riotous crowd beforehand and trying to coerce his vice-president to reject the electoral college vote after failing to get states like Michigan to put up fake Trump electors. Nope, the Supreme Court has chosen to reward Trump's unruly behavior, as have most states by allowing him to stay on the ballot.
So, now it's up to the people. Please don't be sheeple. There's no reason to be submissive and allow yourself to be herded by this mangy animal. Here he is gloating over the decision as if it absolves him of all wrongdoing. Do you really want to be led by this guy?
