Lula Wins! It was a great day yesterday! The Seattle Seahawks trounced the Kansas City Chiefs although Sam Darnold still looks like shit. What was with that interception at the end of the first half? A student-led political party ousted Serbia's so-called Progressive Party, led by Putin and Trump ally Aleksandar Vučic.  Lula pulled off a miracle in Brazil and won the national election by a whopping three points over Bolsonaro's son, ensuring Jair spends at least four more years under house arrest. Unlike Vučic, Bolsonaro didn't concede. However, the best news of all is that House Democrats are favored to blowout the Republicans in the Midterms despite all the redistricting we saw take place this past year. CNN now gives them a 71% chance of scoring a landslide.  There doesn't seem to be much Trump can do about it despite calling in heavy hitters like Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Floyd Mayweather at his rallies across the country. I guess you can call this the ultimate fuck you to Donald Trump. Both Russia and Ukraine ignored his warning to cease energy strikes. It was a one-way deal to begin with. His Trumpness only wanted Ukraine to cease and desist as he had just negotiated a multi-million barrel deal with Putin to deliver badly needed diesel gasoline on the market in the vain hope this would bring prices down before the Congressional mid-term elections in November.  The national diesel price average still tops 6 USD per gallon . Down slightly but not enough to appease a restless electorate that has seen prices rise across the board this past year, due mostly to the ongoing war in Iran, not Ukraine. This was seen as a gift to Putin, as he has had to deal with a restless public himself. Massive fuel shortages have plagued the country as the result of missile and drone strikes on oil refineries and fuel storage tanks. Navi Pillay, this year's Peace Nobelist Once again Trump got passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize. No big surprise given he started two wars and played an active role in a third. Still, his Trumpness was upset. He called it a big mistake and to drive his point home imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, as this year's recipient of Nobel's most prestigious award, Navi Pillay , is an International Court Jurist. He's in a really vindictive mood these days. He thinks Ukraine hasn't gone far enough in appeasing Russia and decided to buy diesel from Putin's oil empire. Trump hopes that this will help offset the cost at the pump, which has hit a new high. He announced this latest deal like it was a real game changer , but few are buying it. Here we are 20 months after he famously declared he could end the war in 24 hours, and he has resorted to pleas to stop the fighting. In his addled mind, it is Ukraine that is driving up the price of diesel fuel by bombing refineries and storage tanks in Russia. No doubt these drone attacks have contributed to the spike in fuel prices, but oddly enough Trump doesn't seem to think his own war in Iran has anything to do with it. I guess once you've "jumped the shark," anything is game and that certainly seems to be the case with Donald Trump, who has reshaped his story that he was carried away by two firefighters when the United States Steel tower collapsed a couple days after the World Trade Center towers. He allegedly had lent his work crew to help clean up the debris, but there are no records of this occurring or him ever being there.  He's knocked this story around for ten years, using it as a means to express his proximity to events and make it sound like he has some special insight. I suppose the "firemen" are symbolic of the brave warriors he knows he has to venerate even though it is himself he wants to put at the center of events.  The irony is he didn't attend the 25th anniversary memorial service in New York, choosing to go to the Pentagon instead, where he could give a speech. Given that all of Eastern Germany voted for AfD in the 2025 national parliamentary election, it is not a big surprise they took Saxony-Anhalt . I suppose it is the sheer size of their majority that shocked poll watchers as this was supposed to be a close election. It had been close the last time but the CDU won and was able to form a majority state government. Now, they can only hope no one is willing to form a coalition with the ultra right-wing party and that they will able to form a government with the minority place holders. It might be time to consider moving the capitol of Germany back to Bonn if this pattern holds up. Everything seemed to be going fine. The US and Canada were on the cusp of a mutually beneficial trade agreement that would have ended more than a year of bitter discord. Then entered Howard Lutnick , US Secretary of Commerce and one of the "architects" of Project 2025. He was unhappy with some of the proposals on the table and demanded they be removed, essentially throwing months of negotiations out the window. Lutnick being the asswipe that he is, blamed it on Canada's last second demands, particularly as the pertained to heavy-duty trucks, but Prime Minister Carney was having none of it. Lutnick's demands infringed on Canada's sovereignty and he called his negotiators back to Ottawa. Trump was left high and dry after boasting a deal would soon be struck because of his hardball tactics. Or the unmaking of The Odyssey We haven't heard much from the tech billionaire now that The Odyssey has itself become a billionaire. That's pretty impressive for a historical drama. Chris Nolan's magnum opus has grossed more than The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur , adjusted for inflation, films that commanded a huge audience in their day and became long-running syndicated movies on television. It makes you wonder if Elon will really risk making his own AI version given it is not likely he will top those numbers. Money has a way of shutting up people. Some images are easy to spot as fake and give us a good laugh . Other images and stories seem tantalizingly real and so we spread them because they suit our cognitive bias. Facebook is filled with them. There is absolutely no fact-checking going on social media these days and so viral stories proliferate and find their way into feeds everywhere. Exhibit A:  Trump attacks Caitlin Clark — and gets a response he won’t soon forget. This one told the story of Trump accusing Clark of being "too woke" with Clark responding at a packed arena, “The president of the United States says athletes should stay quiet,” Clark began. “But sports have always been about more than wins and losses. They’re about teamwork, respect, and believing that everyone deserves a fair chance.” None of it is true but it played well on facebook. It's amazing how easy it is for politicians and pundits to flip. A couple recent examples are John Fetterman and Bill Maher. Here they can be seen together on " Real Time " lamenting the direction the Democratic Party is taking and how they are seriously considering switching parties or voting for Republican candidates, VP Vance in Maher's case , whom he also recently interviewed.  To this point Fetterman has considered himself a Democrat. He even took a progressive stance in his 2022 run for the Senate before suffering a massive stroke. Takes a lot to bring down a big guy like that but he spent much of his campaign in the hospital. Since then it has been hard to tell where he stands. "Libertarian" perhaps? A convenient moniker for those who no longer want to align themselves with a political party, but here he was supporting Trump's ballroom because he thinks it will give the president better protection, Trump's foreign policy  including the Iran W...

Ever since Belarus completed construction of its twin Ostrovets nuclear power plant near the border of Lithuania, we have periodically been issued potassium iodide (KI) capsules through the local pharmacy. The first packet got crushed in my wallet. The second I now house in a stainless steel pill tube attached to my key chain. The idea is that if we were to experience a nuclear explosion similar to Chernobyl, the tablets would buy us some time during evacuation. From what little I've read about KI , it is not really suitable for someone my age, but the state health department issued the tablets to everyone just the same, recommending 130 mg. for those over 12 years old. I suppose an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in this case, especially after watching the HBO mini-series Chernobyl, which was largely filmed in Lithuania .
