No more MTG!

I've been seeing a lot of MTG license plates recently.  Seems like the Lithuanian motor vehicle departments is near the end of its M series.  I resent that Marjorie Taylor Greene is the first thing that pops into my head. She branded herself MTG like some trailer trash rapper from the boondocks of Georgia.

The media has not only done a great job of making Trump front page news again, but has elevated a number of his MAGA cult members to celebrity status by constantly running stories on them.  When they are not trying to shutdown federal government, they promote non-issues like Sister Sarah's recent effort to lead 16 red state governors in demanding the Biden administration ban the sale of American farmland to Chinese investors.  It doesn't matter that China holds less than one percent of foreign-owned property in the US, it's the principle that's at stake.  The media blythely obliges them by putting these stories at the top of my news feed on yahoo and other social media sites.

I'm so sick of hearing about these yahoos but there is no way to get them out of my head.  George Santos never accomplished anything in his life but was made into a celebrity by unexpectedly winning New York's 3rd Congressional District in 2022, only to find out he ran on a pack of lies.  Why should it matter as the GOP's number one guy has built his entire brand on lies?  Nonetheless, more than 100 Republicans voted along with Democrats for his expulsion when it was learned he had broken federal law.  Gasp!  I suppose this was an attempt to clear some taint from the GOP brand.

It could also pave the way for the expulsion of Democrats that Republicans can't stand like Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar.  Don't be surprised as conservatives are paying big bucks to get Democrats to run against these representatives in the next election cycle, knowing that a Republican could never win these urban districts.

Republicans almost lost Boebert's conservative district in the 2022 midterms to a virtual nobody who had very little funding.  Since her handjob in a public theater, Adam Frisch has received huge infusions of cash to run against the pistol-packing grandma a second time.  He's not the "Democrat" she beat off during Beetlejuice.

The Freedom Caucus has grown over the years to include a virtual Rogues' Gallery of unsavory characters.  Few have any real qualifications to be in Congress, having benefited solely from riding Trump's coattails since 2016.  Scott Perry currently heads up this infamous caucus, but MTG is the real force behind the caucus, negotiating deals with McCarthy before he was unceremoniously ousted for having reneged on these promises. Their sole purpose is to shutdown government and they don't abide by any Speaker joining forces with the enemy.  Mike Johnson has been put on notice

The amazing part is that this caucus only amounts to 20% of the GOP House majority, yet is literally the tail wagging the dog.  This is due in large part to all the attention they get.  After Gaetz led the motion to vacate against McCarthy, he was all over the news.  He was even granted an interview on Jake Tapper's State of the Union, much to former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's chagrin who followed afterward.  Why are you wasting time with him, Nancy asked?  Duh, he generates ratings.

America seems to love these assclowns.  They have turned Congress into a 24/7 Reality Show.  Look at all the attention James Comer, another Freedom Caucus member, is getting for revealing that Hunter Biden paid back his father for the loan on his truck through his law firm's account, which Comer claims came from China.  We are talking about $4500 here, whereas Trump enterprises have received millions from China, not to mention the trademarks Ivanka got while her father was in office.  It becomes such a farce that we just turn the other way, blaming both sides in this endless game of false equivalences.

It's tough being the adult in the room.  The media piled on the Democrats when none of them voted to save McCarthy in his dying hours.  He lost his seat to 9 Freedom Caucus members.   The petulant former speaker pushed to have Pelosi's office vacated after the ouster vote so that he would still have a good view of the mall.  This is what Democrats have to deal with on a daily basis in Congress and yet they are the ones often blamed for the chaos.

The media does little to alter these perceptions.  In fact it plays into them regularly as CNN political pundits pitch the same talking points found on conservative outlets, like Biden being too old to run for a second term but hardly ever question Trump's age or growing dementia.  They love Trump because he generates ratings any time they talk about him.  CNN even went so far as to stage a town hall for His Orangeness despite all the indictments being handed down by federal and state grand juries.  As with the leader of the MAGA movement, so too  his proxies in Congress and state government.  CNN and other mainstream news outlets help further their agenda by constantly giving them airtime with very little pushback despite repeating the same lies over and over again.

It's enough to make any grown person cynical and angry.  It certainly makes me angry when the first thing that pops into my head when I see MTG is this bitch.  I would love nothing more than to shake her out of my head but I can't because she is constantly pitching up on my news feeds.

Dylan in America

Whoever it was in 1969 who named the very first Bob Dylan bootleg album “Great White Wonder” may have had a mischievous streak. There are any number of ways you can interpret the title — most boringly, the cover was blank, like the Beatles’ “White Album” — but I like to see a sly allusion to “Moby-Dick.” In the seven years since the release of his first commercial record, Dylan had become the white whale of 20th-century popular song, a wild, unconquerable and often baffling force of musical nature who drove fans and critics Ahab-mad in their efforts to spear him, lash him to the hull and render him merely comprehensible. --- Bruce Handy, NYTimes ____________________________________________ I figured we can start fresh with Bob Dylan.  Couldn't resist this photo of him striking a Woody Guthrie pose.  Looks like only yesterday.  Here is a link to the comments building up to this reading group.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

Welcome to this month's reading group selection.  David Von Drehle mentions The Melting Pot , a play by Israel Zangwill, that premiered on Broadway in 1908.  At that time theater was accessible to a broad section of the public, not the exclusive domain it has become over the decades.  Zangwill carried a hopeful message that America was a place where old hatreds and prejudices were pointless, and that in this new country immigrants would find a more open society.  I suppose the reference was more an ironic one for Von Drehle, as he notes the racial and ethnic hatreds were on display everywhere, and at best Zangwill's play helped persons forget for a moment how deep these divides ran.  Nevertheless, "the melting pot" made its way into the American lexicon, even if New York could best be describing as a boiling cauldron in the early twentieth century. Triangle: The Fire That Changed America takes a broad view of events that led up the notorious fire, noting the gro

Team of Rivals Reading Group

''Team of Rivals" is also an America ''coming-of-age" saga. Lincoln, Seward, Chase et al. are sketched as being part of a ''restless generation," born when Founding Fathers occupied the White House and the Louisiana Purchase netted nearly 530 million new acres to be explored. The Western Expansion motto of this burgeoning generation, in fact, was cleverly captured in two lines of Stephen Vincent Benet's verse: ''The stream uncrossed, the promise still untried / The metal sleeping in the mountainside." None of the protagonists in ''Team of Rivals" hailed from the Deep South or Great Plains. _______________________________ From a review by Douglas Brinkley, 2005
