It is hard not to think of Nebraska without thinking of its greatest writer. Here is a marvelous piece by Capote, Remembering Willa Cather . I remember seeing a stage production of O Pioneers! and being deeply moved by its raw emotions. I had read My Antonia before, and soon found myself hooked, like Capote was by the simple elegance of her prose and the way she was able to evoke so many feelings through her characters. Much of it came from the fact that she had lived those experiences herself. Her father dragged the family from Virginia to Nebraska in 1883, when it was still a young state, settling in the town of Red Cloud. named after one of the great Oglala chiefs. Red Cloud was still alive at the time, living on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, in the aftermath of the "Great Sioux Wars" of 1876-77. I don't know whether Cather took any interest in the famous chief, although it is hard to imagine not. Upon his death in 1909, he was eulogi
This was the week I learned to love twitter.
ReplyDeleteThe young bloggers at the Washington Post kept me abreast of all events in real time. And, believe it or not, the live feed from the Guardian's US news site was also very good. I think he must have been posting from NYC via C-Span.
I really don't know what Ted Cruz hopes to gain from all this. The persons he is appealing to represent a very small percentage of the national electorate.
ReplyDeleteI heard the Tea Party and sympathizers make up about 20% of the electorate. Not enough to get you elected but, if true, enough to raise enough money to get things off the ground.
ReplyDeletePersonally, after watching snippets of his faux filibuster, he may be "brilliant" as they say -- that's open to debate -- but for sure I think the man has a screw or two loose.
I think "brilliant" is in the eye of the beholder. In this case, it was Dershowitz who made the comment, and has since retracted it.
ReplyDeleteThe Houston paper also retracted their endorsement of him. Better late than never I guess.
ReplyDelete... but I imagine he still feels the love among his "base." A guy like this only thrives in times of chaos. If anyone needs an object lesson on how Hitler rose to power, this is it. I suppose in that sense he is "brilliant." Maybe this is why Dershowitz had second thoughts.

He's the best friend Democrats have had in a long time. hopefully, the Repukeblicans will have a Cruz-Coulter ticket in 2016.
Or Cruz/Palin since it appears they like to be seen together. I have to think Republicans in general have to be pretty pissed with little Ted after this stunt he tried to pull off.
