To hear Big Balls tell it, some teenage thugs assaulted him and his girlfriend getting into his car with one of them running off with his I-phone. He gallantly tried to defend himself and his girlfriend but was left bloodied and bruised. It created quite an uproar on social media with President Bigger Balls saying the two fifteen year-olds who were arrested should be tried as adults.
If you remember, he wanted the death penalty for the so-called "Central Park Five," which he once again defamed in last year's debate with Kamala Harris. Turned out they were all innocent of the charges of brutally beating a white woman jogger in Central Park, which has since been made into a mini-series. They were about the same age as the alleged assailants who beat up Big Balls, born Edward Coristine.
Now Big Balls may have indeed been beaten up, as he alleged, or he might have just tripped and fell on the pavement running after the kid who nabbed his cellphone. We don't really know, nor did most of us care until Trump declared martial law on DC, claiming it to be a city "overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people."
It doesn't matter that none of this is true but rather that it is the perception many Americans, and in particular MAGA Americans, have of DC. They have long seen it as a den of iniquity of Biblical proportions. If the capital city was razed to the ground they would be fine with that, save maybe the White House, which Trump is turning into his golden palace. At that point, I imagine he would move the capital to Mar-a-Lago.
Having tested his presidential authority over DC, he now wants to extend his authority to other perceived crime-ridden cities. He already flexed his power in LA when riots broke out over his heinous round up of illegal immigrants, many of whom turned out not to be illegal but simply had brown skin. California took Trump to court with the judge's decision still pending. However, it seems from this article that Judge Breyer is genuinely concerned by the lengths the Justice Dept. went to justify Trump's federalization of the National Guard and throwing in 700 Marines to boot in his effort to quell the unrest. Not that it will do anything to deter Trump from exercising such authority again thanks to the "absolute immunity" the US Supreme Court bequeathed him.
Basically, Trump can do anything he wants and will use any excuse to call out the troops even if it is just a government employee allegedly getting beat up in the streets of DC. Of course he will use the strongest language possible to defend his decisions. Black mayors are notably worried as he has singled out cities with black mayors, although his hatred for New York is primarily leveled at the prospect of Zohran Mamdani winning the general election in November. He seems fine with Eric Adams, having dropped federal charges against him.
This isn't so much about fighting crime as it is adjudicating a long list of petty and not-so-petty grievances. He's sore Washington changed its nickname to the Commanders and threatened to block the NFL team's return to DC if it didn't change its name back to the Redskins. He's still smarting from the court case he lost in New York over tax fraud and has subpoenaed New York AG Letitia James in a civil rights investigation. His civil rights of course, as he has also issued a "debanking order" over what he regarded as unfair practices by major US banks not extending him loans back in the 90s when he was considered a major financial risk given all his bankruptcies. He was forced into being underwritten by Russian oligarchs instead. Poor baby.
"Vengeance will be mine," taking one of the few quotes he might know from the Bible, as this is a guy who truly considers himself God right now. Most of his MAGA faithful are perfectly fine with an autocratic president, as they believe in an autocratic God. The line has become blurred between Donald and God, especially after the failed assassination attempt last summer. Trump seems to believe he came back from the dead even if only his ear was grazed. Many in the MAGA movement also see him as the second coming with his unprecedented second term further proof of his resurrection.
So, he tests this Biblical authority like a child would test his parents to see how much he can get away with. If he can get away with stationing national guard patrols in prominent DC locations, then bring on Baltimore, New York, Chicago and Oakland. If nothing else he can freeze out these primarily Democratic cities in the midterm elections coming up next year by making it difficult for these urban denizens to get to the ballot box. After all this is how Democrats win elections.
No wonder he is considering giving Big Balls the highest civilian honor - the Presidential Medal of Freedom - for his heroic act in Logan Circle on a hot August night. This was the excuse he needed to impose martial law in DC and bring its 700,000 mostly Black Democratic citizens to heel.
