The world is not enough

Trump and his mini-me

The 20-point peace plan has worked so well in Gaza that now His Trumpness is pitching one for Ukraine. After a 4-hour call with Vlad the Impaler, His Trumpness tried to convince Zelenskyy into signing a similar deal.  He even sweet talked the Ukrainian president, telling him what a nice jacket he wore and what a beautiful signature he had, a veritable work of art. The press conference was painful to watch as it was so obviously orchestrated to make the Ukrainian president look small and inconsequential. However, Zelenskyy said no thanks.  Not until Russia quits bombing our cities.

I really don't understand why it is so difficult for the Trump administration to recognize what is happening.  Either that or they simply don't care.  More important to get those mineral deals to keep making those hi tech products that dominate our market today.  Even in this regard, Russia has the upper hand, as it has seized the most valuable lithium deposits in Ukraine. The White House appears to have a combined IQ of 85.

Besides, the White House can wait.  The Nobel Peace Prize doesn't come around for another year. Maybe Jar Jar Kushner can try to forge an actual bipartisan agreement rather than cater to Russia's interests, unlike the deal he and "Monty Hall" forged for Israel. It would be in the administration's real estate interests, as the estimated cost of rebuilding Ukraine is well over $500 billion.  Far more than it would cost to rebuild Gaza. That's a lot of money to split among the robber barons.

Mostly, Vlad just wanted Don to cancel the Tomahawk deal.  Ukraine is already making life miserable enough for Russia with all its drones.  Ukrainian drones continue to take out oil refineries to the point there were long lines at petrol stations across Russia. Moscow actually had to import some of its petrol back from India and China to make up for the shortfall.  How's that for irony. So, Trump said no Tomahawks. They're big powerful weapons, he rasped in his signature voice. We need them.

As if to rub salt in the wound, Trump has taken Viktor Orban up on his offer to host a "peace summit" in Budapest, who has vowed safe passage for war criminal Putin. It's not like anything is going to come out of this meeting other than another attempt to force Zelenskyy's hand.  NATO leaders had thought they had turned a corner this past summer when Trump seemed exasperated with Putin and had authorized an arms deal where Germany and other NATO states bought badly needed munitions for Ukraine. But, we are right back to square one.

No surprise because Trump still thinks his best interests lie with Russia, not Ukraine, or Europe for that matter.  This is a guy who has been in Moscow's back pocket since 1987, allowed countless Russian oligarchs to launder their ill-gotten money through his resorts and casinos, and has always considered Vlad a really smart guy, a swell guy, a guy he can do business with.

No amount of ass kissing is going to put Zelenskyy or any other European leader on good terms with His Trumpness.  He expects everyone to cater to his whims. He even showed off his plans for his big, beautiful ballroom to Zelenskyy. He also unveiled a plan and model for a big beautiful triumphal arc.  You can't spell triumph without Trump. The sooner European leaders accept that this vainglorious man doesn't have their back, the better.

Trump is the slouching, wheezing embodiment of corporate America.  The kind of image cartoonists used to draw of the corpulent money grabbers that dominated the roaring 1920s.  Here we are a century later going through the exact same "golden era" and will face the exact same repercussions because these guys don't give a rat's ass about the economy other than what they can skim off it. When the banks crumble, they will hide in their bunkers and wait for the skies to clear and come up like the ugly little moles they are, once again taking advantage of the gullible masses desperate for any crumbs that might fall their way.

It is so sad to watch as we have gone through this multiple times before.  We just keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again, too dumb apparently to recognize them. Trump doesn't care about Gaza or Ukraine or even Israel or Russia for that matter.  He only cares about himself and the awful legacy he is leaving the world.

Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.

  1. Israel and Gaza....Russia and Ukraine.... this country versus that country....this ethnic majority versus that ethnic minority.....the haves versus the have nots....Homo sapiens versus Neanderthals. Humanity has been slaughtering itself since the dawn of time. If we're not careful, this will all turn into a perverse game of musical chairs, with the winner's prize being a bombed out wasteland barely capable of supporting rats and cockroaches. Oh, right..... that's what virtually all of Gaza and parts of Ukraine have become. Congratulations to the winners!!

As far as news from Washington and "His tRumpiness" are concerned, it all just feels like watching a train wreck in painfully slow motion (and with our eyelids clamped open ala Clockwork Orange). Some of our elected Republican officials in the House and Senate are starting to slowly recover their senses after drinking too much of the MAGA Kool aid, but it's all happening at a snail's pace.

One might, for example, believe that a Senator or a House member from the Midwest would be screaming bloody murder about the impact that the ill-conceived tariffs had on farmers, but nope.... they're just pleased as punch (and that's grape flavored MAGA punch with just a pinch of cyanide) that the Dear Leader is promising to bail out the farmers (at the expense of taxpayers).

The in-process steamrolling over those pesky parts of the constitution continues. The 1st and 4th continue to be under brutal assault and I'm expecting any day to have National Guard troops demanding quartering in my empty upstairs bedrooms. But I've been assured that the 2nd amendment is safe and secure.

And now a Triumphal Arch for the Dear Leader's freshly gold-leafed Capitol. Plans for the future Hunger Games are surely in the works. The ongoing construction of the tRump Ballroom, the "Rose Garden Club at the White House" and now a glorious gilded "tRump Arch" - all this reminds me of high school English Literature and Shelley's poem "Ozymandias" -

"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!"

"My name is tRumpimandias, the Greatest King Ever!!! Look at my fabulous golden creations, and be impressed!"

  2. It's like we are experiencing an alternative reality show universe. I would like to think that in the other universe Kamala Harris won the election and our other selves are enjoying a normal existence.

Team of Rivals Reading Group

''Team of Rivals" is also an America ''coming-of-age" saga. Lincoln, Seward, Chase et al. are sketched as being part of a ''restless generation," born when Founding Fathers occupied the White House and the Louisiana Purchase netted nearly 530 million new acres to be explored. The Western Expansion motto of this burgeoning generation, in fact, was cleverly captured in two lines of Stephen Vincent Benet's verse: ''The stream uncrossed, the promise still untried / The metal sleeping in the mountainside." None of the protagonists in ''Team of Rivals" hailed from the Deep South or Great Plains. _______________________________ From a review by Douglas Brinkley, 2005

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

Welcome to this month's reading group selection.  David Von Drehle mentions The Melting Pot , a play by Israel Zangwill, that premiered on Broadway in 1908.  At that time theater was accessible to a broad section of the public, not the exclusive domain it has become over the decades.  Zangwill carried a hopeful message that America was a place where old hatreds and prejudices were pointless, and that in this new country immigrants would find a more open society.  I suppose the reference was more an ironic one for Von Drehle, as he notes the racial and ethnic hatreds were on display everywhere, and at best Zangwill's play helped persons forget for a moment how deep these divides ran.  Nevertheless, "the melting pot" made its way into the American lexicon, even if New York could best be describing as a boiling cauldron in the early twentieth century. Triangle: The Fire That Changed America takes a broad view of events that led up the notorious fire, not...

The People Debate the Constitution

As Pauline Maier describes in Ratification , there was no easy road in getting the Constitution ratified.  After 10 years of living together as a loosely knit confederation, a few forward thinking men decided that the Articles of Confederation no longer worked and it was time to forge a Constitution.  Washington would not go until he could be assured something would come of the convention and that there would be an august body of gentlemen to carry the changes through.  But, ultimately Maier describes it was the people who would determine the fate of the new Constitution. This is a reading group for Ratification: The People Debate the Constitution 1787-1788 .  The book has been well received by fellow historians like Jack Rakove , among others.  Maier has drawn from a wealth of research piecing together a story that tells the arduous battle in getting the Constitution ratified.  A battle no less significant than that Americans fought for independence.
